Belgian actress Emilie Dequenne passed away from an uncommon form of cancer on Sunday in a hospital located just outside of Paris, as confirmed by her family and agent to AFP. She was 43 years old.

She revealed in October 2023 that she was suffering from adrenocortical carcinoma, a cancer of the adrenal gland.

Her first role in the “Rosetta“, by the Dardenne brothers, launched her career after she won best actress at the Cannes film festival for her performance in the film, which also won the Golden Palm.

In addition, she received numerous more accolades for her roles in mostly French-language films, such as the drama “Our Children” (2012) and the film “The Girl on the Train” (2009).

The English-language catastrophe picture “Survive” was released in 2024, and she returned to the Cannes film festival to commemorate the 25th anniversary of her victory there with the Dardenne brothers.  It was the final movie she starred in before her sickness caused her to quit.
